Rutare Elementary School is the second largest of the five community schools, with 259 students and 10 teachers. Started in 2002, the school has classes from K3 to 7th grade. Between 2011 and 2013, Kisoro Kids has provided funds for roofing materials and labor for two classrooms, dry cement for concreting the floors of six classrooms, and cement for plastering the walls of four classrooms. The walls are plastered to deter erosion from rain and wind, and to provide a smooth surface to hang wall charts.
Rutare has a very active parent-teacher association (PTA). They meet regularly and call parents who were unable to attend to tell them about the meeting. The community involvement has been so remarkable that even a Ugandan government worker started contributing to their efforts.
